Dry season or rainy season: what to expect month by month and when to book your tickets.
Cusco sits at 3,400 m. Here's how to keep altitude sickness from knocking you out of the game.
Cusco sits at about 3,400 meters (11,150 ft) above sea level, and several tours go above 4,000 m (13,100 ft). Altitude sickness, known locally as soroche, can cause headaches, fatigue, nausea or trouble sleeping during your first few days.
Set aside at least one or two easy days before any high-mountain trek. A City Tour or the Sacred Valley, which sits lower than Cusco, are great ways to start.
Drink water often, try coca or muña tea, and avoid heavy meals and alcohol for the first 48 hours.
Walk slowly, take stairs calmly and rest when you need to. If symptoms are severe or get worse, seek medical attention: our high-altitude tours carry oxygen and a first-aid kit.
If you have a heart or respiratory condition, or are pregnant, ask your doctor about preventive measures before you travel.
